“Message From Dad”

Hello Stuart

I am your Father. We first met on 2 Mar 71 in Hannover, Germany. You could not talk as you did not know how to . . . I could not talk as I was full of alchohol in celebration of your arrival. And yes, at first you did look like Winston Churchill.

Your knowledge of all matters IT has come on a bit since I first bought you a Vic 20 computer for your 7th Birthday . . . you outgrew it over one weekend and demanded to have a Commodore 64 (I thought that was a Royal Navy rank). I recall that you immediately made a data-base of my fishing flies and tried to teach me the fundamentals of IT, a wasted effort as I was still trying to master the TV remote control. When you and your little schools friends gathered at our married quarter in Fleming Close, Arborfield to discuss computer stuff, it was like a scene from "The Village of the Damned." A gang of little blond haired people that stopped talking whenever an adult appeared, then the "group staring" that drove the onlooker from the vicinity. I think really it was because the adults did not have a clue what you were talking about and thought that computers were kids toys and that is what they would always be.

Computers came late to me in life and although I have ECDL and use IT daily, I still feel that they are inferior to me as they do not always do what I want and ask me questions that I do not understand, and I have to clean them.

When you decided to go to University your Mum and I were very proud. When you declared that you would study Artificial Intelligence I thought, "how strange". He is going to spend 3 years studying me!

The rest is history . . . you are cleverer, eminently experienced, well qualified and have gained the wisdom associated with hard study and work. The only advantage that I have over my computer is that when "it does my head in" I can pull the plug. No doubt in a few years if I try that ploy, the computer will advise me, "pull that plug and I will micro-wave you."

Over the years I have mastered the TV remote and hope by the time that the Grim Reaper comes for me that I will have made some headway with the video recorder. Computers though . . . I surrender.

I will log-out now (see, I now talk the talk)as my fingers are sore typing.

Dad
(on this planet but just visiting)
